Testimonial by Dr. Manisha Patil (Artist and Art Historian)

Anjali and Gulzar Gawali are an artist couple who have been committed to their art practice for almost three decades in addition to devoting their time to art teaching. Their sensibilities and creative impulses are quite distinct from one another. . .

Anjali  Gawali’s  paintings  derive  inspiration  from diverse  sources  including  her  roots,  an d display  a  predilection  for  tradition.  Having  been  intensely  into  yoga  and  meditation  since  long,  she  incorporates  many  of  its  symbols  such  as  the  "ashta chakra"  in  her  work.  Anjali’s  figuration  particularly  has  overtones  of  Indian  miniatures,  as  do  certain  elements  of  landscape,  flora  and  fauna.  Her  palette  is  vibrant,  comprising  of  warm  reds,  deep  blues  and  brilliant  greens,  and  there  is  an  obvious  interest  in  play  of  textures.  The  images  are  often  supported  by  signs  and  calligraphic  passages  from  religious  scriptures,  partly  painted  and  partly  rendered  in  low  metal  relief.

Gulzar Gawali, nature is his muse, a limitless fountain of motivation.Gawali’s landscapes, with few exceptions, are mostly uninhabited. The vast vistas of undulating umber hued hill ranges, mysterious velvet green valleys, and deep azure skies bathed in dazzling light are imbued with a certain sublime quality. Especially breathtaking are the aerial views, where the gentle slopes of hillocks and meandering streams are punctuated by wing like formations that could very well stand for a soaring bird or a passing cloud. These appear again, hovering over the choppy sea waves that dash against moss covered rocks. Gawali’s dramatic and masterful handling of chiaroscuro lends a surreal twist to the landscapes. Gawali’s paintings are about peace, tranquility and solitude, and reflect the artist’s own persona.
